This “Duckham’s Adcol” double sided sign is in “as found” condition. Alexander Duckham and Company started in 1899 to import oil from Central Trinidad for lubricants. Duckham’s became the second largest of the independent UK blenders after Castrol. In 1969 it was acquired by BP. “Adcol” was an oil/petrol addiditive that inhibited engine corrosion. The sign has the usual enamel losses and nibbles to the edges, there are small patches of enamel loss to the body on both sides, there are also the usual scuffs, stains and scratches that you would expect from an item of this age. However, the impressed white lettering is still clear and legible and the colours have a good depth. The sign has the manufacturers details, “Bruton, Palmers Green” to the bottom of one side. It has its’ hanging loops, these are rusty. This is a superb piece of automobilia which will grace any collection and will display very well. I have tried to show the condition in the photographs. One of the aims of the PRHA was to encourage temperance at Inns and pubs by serving non alcoholic beverages. In 1901 the PRHA owned or managed 14 inns and pubs, which eventually rose to around 130. The PRHA issued a form of directory which had map and description of their pubs. All PRHA pubs offered tea or coffee and a separate room and entrance away from the bar. This sign would have hung outside on of these inns, it still has its’ original hanging hooks. The sign has the usual enamel losses and nibbles to the edges, there are also small patches of enamel loss to the body on both sides. It also has the usual scuffs, staining and scratches that you would expect from an item of this age. However, the stylish white and blue lettering is still clear and legible and the cobalt blue colour has a good depth and gloss. The hanging loops are rusty. It measures 74 cm (29 inches) by 57 cm (22 1/2 inches). We take great care to describe our items clearly and honestly as possible, including any faults or flaws that we may see.
