Mazda was a trademarked name registered by General Electric (GE) in 1909 for incandescent light bulbs. The name was used from 1909 through 1945 in the United States by GE and Westinghouse. Mazda brand light bulbs were made for decades after 1945 outside the US. The company chose the name due to its association with Ahura Mazda, the transcendental and universal God of Zoroastrianism whose name means light of wisdom in the Avestan language. In 1909 the Mazda name was created for the tungsten filament light bulb. GE promoted the mark as identifying tungsten filament bulbs with predictable performance and life expectancy. GE also licensed the Mazda name, socket sizes, and tungsten filament technology to other manufacturers to establish a standard for lighting. Tungsten-filament bulbs of the Mazda type were initially more costly than carbon filament bulbs, but used less electricity. Often electrical utilities would trade new lamps for consumers’ burned-out bulbs. In at least one case the authority regulating energy rates required the utility to use only tungsten bulbs so as not to inflate customer’s energy use. The company dropped the campaign in 1945. GE’s patents on the tungsten filament lamp expired in the late 1930s and other forms of lighting were becoming more important than incandescent bulbs. 77,779 expired in 2000. Here’s a rarity for the Honda fans out there! These lights were found in HONDA dealerships and workshops around various parts of Japan during the late 1960’s – mid 1970’s. If your in a really rural area of Japan you may even see one in an old shop! That’s where this one came from. When I was travelling around Japan I saw this collecting dust in an old mom & pop bike shop. I had to have it. Recently I have found another in slightly better condition, so this one is no longer required in my collection. Last year I had the cable changed because I was a bit worried about the old one. The original ceramic socket and associated hardware was retained, I also kept the original wall plug and will include. Measurements are approximately 220mm from left to right at the widest point. 200mm high, the opening at the bottom measures 110mm across. It features 2 HONDA logos, one in black the other in red. The body of the lamp is made from perspex, there are no cracks but is does have some surface scratches in places. The power cable is approximately 2m in length. This is in very good condition for its age, the stickers do have some small tears and have peeled in places. There are 2 screws at the top of the light hanging from a roof or mounting to a wall etc. I have made a small metal stand for my other one and converted it to a desk lamp. This is a nice collectible items for HONDA fans or a great functional vintage item for the man cave or displays. It uses a standard screw in light bulb (not included). Please check the wiring & voltage etc before using in your country, remember Japan has a unique power supply.
